Ntomba (Ngata) Coffins
Congo, Central Africa
Male and Female anthropomorphic polychrome coffins called bonganga-nganga. Reports about their use are conflicting. Most likely, the dug up remains of the dead were placed into the coffins, which were displayed in a hut built on top of a tomb. [Marc Leo Felix, 100 People of Zaire and Their Sculptures (1987)] Extremely rare. Carved in wood, Ricinodendron heudelotii, reportedly reserved for the head of the Bonganga closed society. These were carved during a period of up to four months in a secret forest temporaty dwelling called esata.
